Like many old anime fans, my the first anime series I ever watched was Sailor Moon; I’ve loved it ever since I pretended to be Sailor Venus at recess in 2nd grade. For my first cosplay, I wanted to go as a character I was familiar with so it seemed only natural to go as one of the characters I knew and loved best. (I was dubbed Jupiter because I have brown hair - complex, I know.) My friends and I wore our dresses to our first con, Acen 2003 and, although we expected everyone to know who we were cosplaying (we have rainbow dresses, surely we MUST be Sailor Moon characters!) only two people recognized us the entire con. Kind of deflating for a first cosplay experience!
The dress was made entirely by my Mom. The bodice and skirt are separate pieces (inaccurate but pretty all the same) and were made using a prom dress pattern. The bodice is fully lined in a cream fabric, has two small pink roses hand-stitched to the back of the bodice at the shoulders, and closes in the back using imitation crystal buttons. The skirt gathers at the front to expose the cream skirt underneath and closes in the back with a zipper.
This was my very first costume - the one that started it all! In the years since its debut, the Sailor Moon manga dresses have (thankfully) become very popular and I'm happy that I had so many opportunities to wear it!
